Grenada is often celebrated for its lush landscapes, idyllic climate, and pristine beaches, a paradise in the Caribbean. But for thousands of enslaved men, women, and children, it was also a place of pain, survival, and resilience.
Depths of Paradise uncovers these hidden stories. We contrast the lives of estate claimants who received compensation after slavery’s abolition with the lives of those they once enslaved.
In doing so, we restore voices long silenced and reconnect families with their roots. Our work lives in a free digital archive and a community space where every visitor is invited to become part of a growing community amplifying our knowledge and creating space for dialogue.
We believe that remembrance can inspire, and that Grenada’s history deserves its place at the heart of global conversations about reparative justice.
About Us
Depths of Paradise is a passionate initiative led by family researcher Stephen Lewis. While tracing ancestral records, he encountered a stark divide: abundant documentation of estate owners, but near silence surrounding the lives of the enslaved. That absence and the desire to learn more became the spark for this project.
